Background

Ilina Singh is Professor of Neuroscience and Society at the University of Oxford, where she holds a joint appointment between the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Philosophy (Uehiro Centre). Her work examines the psychosocial and ethical implications of advances in biomedicine and neuroscience for young people and families. Recent projects include ADHD VOICES, Neuroenhancement Responsible Research and Innovation, and the Urban Brain Project. In 2014 she received a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award, for a study entitled 'Becoming Good: Early Intervention and Moral Development in Child Psychiatry'.

Professor Singh has published widely in eminent journals including Nature, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Social Science and Medicine and the American Journal of Bioethics. She is lead editor of the volume BioPrediction, Biomarkers and Bad Behavior: Scientific, Ethical and Legal Challenges, published by Oxford University Press and coedited with Walter-Sinnott Armstrong and Julian Savulescu. She has acted as an adviser to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the National Institute of Mental Health and other organisations. She is Coeditor of the journal BioSocieties.

Background

Richard Ashcroft is Professor of Bioethics at Queen Mary University of London, where he teaches medical law and ethics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in the Department of Law. He is currently working on the role of human rights theory, law and practice in bioethics policy, and on ethical challenges in public health. He has a longstanding interest in biomedical research ethics, and previously he was Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Incentives in Health, funded by the Wellcome Trust with partners at King's College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Professor Ashcroft trained in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge, completing a PhD thesis on ethics in scientific research. He went on to work as a Research Fellow in Philosophy at Liverpool University, a Lecturer in Ethics in Medicine at Bristol University, and a Lecturer - eventually Reader and Head of the Ethics Unit - at Imperial College London. Before joining the School of Law, he was Professor of Biomedical Ethics at Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry. In 2005 he held an Australian Bicentennial Fellowship, visiting the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne.

Background

Dr Des Fitzgerald is a postdoctoral researcher at Durham University's Department of Geography and at Hubbub, the first residency of The Hub at the Wellcome Collection. A sociologist with longstanding interests in neuroscience, psychology and the relationship of the biological to the social, he has active research projects on the autism spectrum, on the historical psychology of the restless city, and on logics of collaboration in the contemporary academy.

Background

Dr Raffaele Rodogno is Associate Professor in Philosophy at Aarhus University. He is an ethicist working on areas including the notion of wellbeing, its epistemology and measurement, and the way it should be applied to individuals with autism. He is Codirector of autism@aarhus, a network anchored at Aarhus University whose function is to create channels of communication between autism researchers and the autism community.

Sandy Starr is Communications Officer at the Progress Educational Trust, a charity working in the fields of genetics, assisted conception and embryo/stem cell research. He is Webmaster of the charity's flagship publication BioNews, and is also a member of the Editorial Board of the autism research charity Autistica.
