The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-EBI) is an international centre of excellence in molecular biology research and services, funded by 20 member states. The cornerstones of EMBL-EBI's mission are to perform basic, investigator-driven research in molecular biology, to train scientists, students and visitors at all levels, to provide facilities and services for the scientific community, and to engage in technology transfer activities.
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-EBI) is a part of EBI providing bio-molecular information services and engaging in bio-informatics research.
EMBL-EBI has supported the needs of pharmaceutical and other industries for over 12 years through their Industry Programme, which kick-starts research of importance to industry, provides expert training, develops bio-informatics standards, helps partners with technical development; and provides regular networking opportunities
The Microarray Informatics group, consisting of over 35 members, headed by Dr. A. Brazma, is responsible for developing and running the ArrayExpress database - a public service resource for microarray and gene expression data. The group initiated and coordinated the establishment of international standards and ontologies for microarray data, later extended to other domains of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
In addition to ArrayExpress, the group is in charge of data management in several major medical bioinformatics projects. The Microarray group coordinated building of a generic open source suite of tools for multi-omics data management (www.simbioms.org).
